The movie opens with a series of questions about humanity and what we know to be true. After the credits, the camera zooms into a house and stops at a ringing telephone. Lola picks up and begins talking to Manni. Manni is in a telephone booth and questions her about where shes been and that she was supposed to be waiting for him at the spot they had planned on. She tells him some guy stole the moped she was on while she was in the store and that it happened so fast she couldnt catch up to him. Manni begins to cry and tells Lola that he made a big mistake and claims theyre going to kill him. Lola asks him what happened and he begins to recollect the events. He says everything was going as planned; the car transactions went well, he got the diamonds he needed and crossed the border successfully and his encounter with a dealer went well and he got the money he needed: 100,000 marks. All that was missing was her waiting for him at the spot. He walked to the train station and got on but then a bum bumped into him and fell. He helped him up but then two security guards got on and on instinct he got off leaving the bag of money on the seat. He did not realize it until a minute or two later. He tried to go back and get it but was stopped by the two security guards. The train left with the bag of money and the bum opened it and immediately grabbed on to it. He tells Lola he would not be in this situation if she had been there on time. He blames her for being so sensitive and for believing love can solve anything so he tells her to come up with 100,000 marks in twenty minutes because that is all the time he has left before he has to meet Ronnie, his boss, and turn in the money or else hell kill him. He begins to tell her that over and over again until Lola screams Stop so loud, a few glasses on her TV set break. She finally tells him that she will come up with something in twenty minutes. She tells him to stay where he is and shell get him the money. He gets desperate and spots a store across from his phone booth and tells her that hes going rob it because thats the only way he can come up with that much money in twenty minutes. Lola thinks hes crazy and tells him again not to move from there and she tosses the phone and begins to think who she can go to. Images of possible people flash in her head until she finally decides on her dad.First Run: She begins to run through the city and she bumps into a woman and her baby in a carriage. Then in a series of photo shots, it depicts the womans future and her baby is being taken away from her by social services and her taking someone elses baby in a park. It returns to Lola running meanwhile her dad and a woman is having a conversation in his office at a bank. The woman is telling him that she cannot go on lying and doesnt know who she will wait for a man who doesnt want to be with her. Meanwhile Lola is still running and encounters a guy on a bike who while riding next to her wants to sell her the bike for 50 marks but she says no. Then in a series of photo shots, his future is shown and he gets beat up by some men and his bike is taken away. He ends up in a hospital where he meets a nurse and they get married. It goes back to Lola running and crosses in front a car that barley misses hitting her. The man driving stares at her and doesnt see the other car coming and crashes into it. Manni is still in the booth. He is talking to someone and asks the person what hes supposed to do with 500 marks. He hangs up and returns the phone card to the blind lady he borrowed it from but she doesnt take it. Meanwhile, Lolas dad and the woman are still talking and she tells him he has to decide whether or not he wants to be with her because shes pregnant. Lola finally reaches her dads work and is running to his office but accidentally bumps into a clerical worker. Again, in a series of photo shots, her future is shown and she gets into a car accident and is paralyzed then she commits suicide. Lola finally reaches her dads office and asks him for help. She tells him she needs 100,000 marks or her boyfriend will die. He starts to ask questions about her boyfriend and she tells him It doesnt matter in a scream so loud, she breaks the glass wall clock. He then walks her out and tells her he is leaving her mother and marrying another woman and that he is not her father and throws her out. Lola is dazed for a little bit then exits the bank. A lady approaches her and asks her whats wrong but Lola asks for the time and begins to run again. Manni is on the phone with someone and seems frustrated so he walks up to the store he plans on robbing and looks inside. Meanwhile, Lola is running and repeating over and over for Manni to wait for her. Manni makes up his mind and enters the store and Lola gets there too late because hes already pointing a gun and telling the cashiers to open the cash registers. She bangs on the window glass and asks him why he didnt wait for her and he tells her she got here too late. He then asks her if shes with him and at first she just wants to go but then she grabs a bag of glass bottles from a lady nearby, goes in and hits the security guard on the head. She grabs the gun from him and covers for Manni while he gets the money from the registers and they take off. Theyre running but the police blocks them on one end so they run the other way but they get blocked in from that side as well. Manni throws the bag of cash at the police and cop, while looking up at the bag, accidentally fires his drawn gun and hits Lola in the chest. She falls back and Manni goes to her. She thinks back to when she and Manni were in bed together and she questions his love for her. Manni finally asks her if she wants to leave and she replies no, she does not want to leave and then says Stop and the movie goes back to the beginning.Second Run: She hangs up the phone and begins running with her dad already in mind. She bumps into the same woman and her baby. This time in the series of photo shots, the woman wins the lotto and is happy. Lola continues to run and encounters the man on the bike again but this time his photo shots depict him as a bum and a drug junkie. She keeps running and instead of crossing the car, she jumps over it but the man still crashes into the other car because hes staring at her. She continues to run and bumps into the homeless guy with the bag of cash. She obviously does not know he has the money and keeps running. Meanwhile, her dad and the woman are having the same conversation and she asks him if he wants to have a baby with her even though it might not be his. At that moment, Lola enters the bank and this time as shes running to her dads office, she doesnt bump into the clerical worker. She gets to the office and finds them arguing. This time he is telling the woman he cannot leave his sick wife and three kids. He tells Lola to leave them alone and to go home but she tells him she needs money. The woman tells her she should be ashamed for barging in on them and Lola calls her a stupid cow and her dad slaps her across the face. Lola begins to throw objects at her dad and leaves on her own. As she exits, the security guard tells her she cant always have what she wants and she walks back but takes the guards gun with her. She reaches her dad again and tells him to go with her but not before she shoots at the wall next to his head to let him know shes serious. She holds the gun to his head as theyre walking out and the clerical worker tries to stop them but Lola tells her to get lost. This time in the clerical workers photo shots, she meets someone within the bank who likes to play dominatrix with her. Lola and her dad reach the front of the bank and tells one of the tellers to bag 100,000 marks but he only has 88,000 marks and he has to go downstairs to get the rest. He returns and Lola tells him to put the money in the garbage can and she takes the bag and leaves. The police have the bank surrounded already and she just stands there staring at them but then the police tell her to get out of the way. They think its someone else holding up the bank so she begins to run to Manni. Manni is looking in to the store hes going to rob but just as he makes up his mind to go in, Lola calls him and he turns around to go to her but as he is crossing the street, he gets run over by an ambulance. This time as he is lying on the street, he flashes back to when he and Lola are in bed together and asks her what she would do if he died and they go back and forth on the issue until Lola finally tells him he isnt dead yet and the movie returns to the beginning again.Third Run: Lola hangs up the phone for a third time and starts to run through the city again. She encounters the woman with the baby but this time doesnt bump into her. This time the womans photo shots depict her having a religious awakening. She encounters the guy on the bike but this time he doesnt try to sell her the bike and instead pulls into a sausage stand and the bum with the money is there. The bum offers to buy the guy a drink and tells him some unexpected things can happen but the guy tries to sell him the bike for 70 marks. Meanwhile, Lola is running and this time she stumbles on the hood of the car of the man and they recognize each other. He is Mr. Meyer, her dads associate and he asks her if everythings okay and she replies no and continues running. Meanwhile, the bum ends up buying the bike and riding it throughout the city. Lolas dad and the woman are conversing and the woman asks him if he wants to have a baby with her. He says yes but then is interrupted by his secretary on the phone. She says Mr. Meyer is outside waiting for him so the dad goes to him. Just as theyre pulling off, Lola reaches the bank and she sees them and yells for them to stop. Meanwhile, Manni is getting out of the phone booth and he returns the phone card to the blind lady. She tells him to wait and turns to look out on the street. Manni follows her gaze and when he does that, the bum on the bike is riding through the street. Manni recognizes him and chases after to him and he almost gets run over by Mr. Meyer but Meyer swerves and hits another car head on. Meanwhile Lola is still running and thinking about what to do and she almost gets run over too by a truck but she spots a casino and goes in. She gets a 100 mark chip and places her bet at a roulette table. She wins 3,500 marks but she bets it all again on the same number and as the roulette wheel is spinning, she starts to scream really loud and it breaks champagne glasses the people are holding. She wins the 100,000 marks she needs and takes off again to find Manni. Meanwhile, Manni stops the bum by pointing a gun at him and he takes the money but the bum then asks for the gun and Manni gives it to him. Lola runs and gets into the back of an ambulance and there is a sick man there. His heart rate is irregular and she claims to be with him and holds his hand and his heart beat regulates. She gets out of the ambulance and calls out for Manni but he isnt there. Then she sees him getting out of a car about a block away with Ronnie. They shake hands and Manni begins to walk towards her and he asks her if everythings okay and they begin walking together. After a minute or so, he asks her whats in the bag shes carrying and the movie ends in a photo shot.

A slick New York publicist who picks up a ringing receiver in a phone booth is told that if he hangs up, he'll be killed... and the little red light from a laser rifle sight is proof that the caller isn't kidding.

Stu Shepard is a fast talking and wise cracking New York City publicist who gets out of trouble and lies with his clever charm, connections, and charisma. Stu's greatest lie is to his wife Kelly, who he is cheating on with his girlfriend, Pam. Upon answering a call in a phone booth in belief it is Pam, Stu is on the line with a dangerous yet intelligent psychopath with a sniper rifle. When realizing it is not a joke, Stu is placed in a powerful mind game of wits and corruption. The New York City Police eventually arrive thereafter and demand Stu comes out of the phone booth- but how can he when if he hangs up or leaves the booth he will die?


Stu Shepard is an arrogant publicist who thinks he has the whole world in his hands. Every day he uses the same phone booth to call the woman he is cheating on his wife with. But on the last day, before this particular phone booth is demolished, the phone rings. Stu naturally answers the phone, only to find the caller on the end is an invisible sniper who knows everything on Stu, including his relationships. The caller now has Stu as his hostage, who demands he comes clean with his wife.

Stuart hasn't been totally honest. In fact, he's about the most dishonest man you'll meet. Everyday, at the same time, he goes to a phone booth in NYC to call his girlfriend, so that his wife can't trace the phone call. Today is no longer just an ordinary day. Now, someone's calling him, leaving his life on the line.

A fiendish publicist finds himself being held hostage in a phone booth by an extreme moralist who watches his victim's every move through the scope of his high-power sniper rifle, while speaking to the publicist via the phone booth. The caller prides himself on using force to punish corrupt people by forcing them to admit all of their lies and sins through mental games, or killing them. At the same time, he eliminates other people as well; everyday people who are guilty of brutal dishonesty and/or corruption, such as a murderous street pimp and a pushy pizza man (all of which, if you look hard enough in the film, have a guilt link). The caller himself is corrupt, and uses it defeat other corruption. It is evil fighting evil in the phone booth.

 

::Malèna (2000) ::

The film is set in 1940 during World War II just as Italy enters the war. Malena's husband, Nino Scordia, leaves to serve in the military. Malena feels sad and tries to cope with her loss, as the town she has just moved to tries to deal with this beautiful woman who gets the attention and lustful stares of all the local men, including the 12-year-old Renato. However, in spite of the villagers' gossip, she continues to be faithful to her husband. Renato becomes obsessed with Malena and starts fantasizing about her while masturbating.The silent, distractingly beautiful outsider learns one day that her husband has been killed. Renato continues to watch as she suffers from loneliness and grief. Malena is shunned by the townspeople and the unattractive, jealous women of the Italian village, who begin to believe the worst about her, simply because of her beauty.She visits her father, an almost deaf professor of Latin, regularly and helps him with his household chores. When a slanderous letter about her sexual morals reaches his hands, their relationship suffers a catastrophic blow. In the meanwhile, the war worsens. The village is bombed and Malena's father is killed.She falls on hard times and eventually has no money. The wife of the local dentist takes her to court, but Malena is acquitted. The only man Malena does have an innocent romance with, an army officer, is sent away because of the trial.Malena's poverty finally forces her to succumb to the greed and malice of the town and she becomes a prostitute, making the wives' fantasies about her a reality. When the German army comes to town, Malena gives herself to Germans as well. Renato sees her in the company of two German officers and faints.His mother and the older ladies of the town think that he has been possessed by the devil and take him to church to exorcise the "demons." His father however understands that he is suffering from sexual hunger and takes him to a brothel; Renato has sex with one of the prostitutes while fantasizing that she is Malena.When the war ends, the women of the village gather and, out of jealousy and hatred, publicly beat and humiliate Malena, who shortly after leaves for Messina. A few days later, Nino Scordia returns to town, to the shock of all the residents. He finds his house occupied by people displaced by the war. Renato tells him through an anonymous letter about Malena's whereabouts.Nino goes to Messina to find her. A year later, they return. The villagers, especially the women, astonished at her courage, begin to talk to "Signora Scordia" with respect. Though still beautiful, they think of her as no threat claiming that she had wrinkles near her eyes and put on some weight.In the last scene near the beach, Renato helps her pick up some oranges that had dropped from her shopping bag. Afterwards he wishes her "Buona fortuna, Signora Malena" (good luck, Mrs. Malena) and rides off on his bicycle, looking back at her for a final time, as she walks away, with the retrospective thought that he has not forgotten her, even after a few years. He said, "Of all the girls who asked me if I remember them, the only one I remembered is the one who did not ask." The audience is left not knowing if Malena ever realizes Renato's feelings for her.

 

::Liar Liar (1997) ::

Fletcher Reede (Carrey) is a particularly career-focused lawyer and divorced father. He has a habit of giving precedence to his job, breaking promises to be with his young son Max, and then lying to both Max and his ex-wife Audrey about the real reason he missed the get-together. Fletcher lets Max down once too often, missing his birthday party, and has to deal with the consequences of a wish Max makes while blowing out the candles on his cake that actually comes true. The wish is that Fletcher cannot tell a lie for an entire day. The plot is reminiscent of The Twilight Zone episode "The Whole Truth," which involves a used car salesman being forced into uninhibited honesty by a haunted car.Fletcher soon has several embarrassing instances where he blurts out exactly what he is thinking and figures out that he is unable to lie or even withhold a true answer. Some of these instances include: After sleeping with a colleague, she asks "was it good for you?" "I've had better," he responds. When an attractive girl says everyone is so nice to her, he says "Well, that's because you have big jugs! I mean - your boobs are huge! I mean - I wanna squeeze em'!" Also when he walks out of the elevator and everyone is plugging their nose, he admits "It was me!". When an obese man asks "What's up," he says, "Your cholesterol, fatty! Dead man walkin'." He also tells a co-worker he doesn't know his name because he's not important enough. When he tries to explain his situation to his secretary, she doesn't believe him so he sets himself up good. He tells her to ask him something she thinks he would normally lie about. She asks him about a raise she wanted a couple months ago. Fletcher had told her it would make the other secretaries jealous. She asks if that was true or if he just didn't want to "pony up the dough". These incidents come at a rather bad time as he is fighting a child custody case in court, which, should he win, could be a huge boost to his career. His main witness is willing to commit perjury to help win but Fletcher discovers he cannot even ask a question if he knows the answer will be a lie. Meanwhile, Audrey is threatening to move to Boston with her new boyfriend, Jerry, and take Max with them.Over the course of the film, Fletcher realizes what is truly important to him and, at the end, struggles to stop his son from being taken so far away from him. He also manages to win the case truthfully by using a loophole in the law, with the repercussions being a major catalyst to his understanding of what he is likely to lose. When he sees the results of winning the case (the mother of the children tries to stop them saying goodbye to their father), he ends up shouting at the judge to reverse the decision and gets thrown in jail for contempt in court. When telephoning Audrey to bail him, she refuses. However, his old secretary turns up and bails him.Near the end, Fletcher hijacks a stairway used to get onto planes and rushes towards his son. He is injured after an accident but does manage to speak to his son. The "Curse" finishes at 8:15 pm, but Fletcher vows to tell nothing but the truth from now on.

 

::Forrest Gump (1994) ::

The film begins with a feather falling to the feet of Forrest Gump who is sitting at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia. Forrest picks up the feather and puts it in the book Curious George, then tells the story of his life to a woman seated next to him. The listeners at the bus stop change regularly throughout his narration, each showing a different attitude ranging from disbelief and indifference to rapt veneration.On his first day of school, he meets a girl named Jenny, whose life is followed in parallel to Forrest's at times. Having discarded his leg braces, his ability to run at lightning speed gets him into college on a football scholarship. After his college graduation, he enlists in the army and is sent to Vietnam, where he makes fast friends with a black man named Bubba, who convinces Forrest to go into the shrimping business with him when the war is over. Later while on patrol, Forrest's platoon is attacked. Though Forrest rescues many of the men, Bubba is killed in action. Forrest is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism.While Forrest is in recovery for a bullet shot to his "butt-tox", he discovers his uncanny ability for ping-pong, eventually gaining popularity and rising to celebrity status, later playing ping-pong competitively against Chinese teams. At an anti-war rally in Washington, D.C. Forrest reunites with Jenny, who has been living a hippie counterculture lifestyle.Returning home, Forrest endorses a company that makes ping-pong paddles, earning himself $25,000, which he uses to buy a shrimping boat, fulfilling his promise to Bubba. His commanding officer from Vietnam, Lieutenant Dan, joins him. Though initially Forrest has little success, after finding his boat the only surviving boat in the area after Hurricane Carmen, he begins to pull in huge amounts of shrimp and uses it to buy an entire fleet of shrimp boats. Lt. Dan invests the money in Apple Computer and Forrest is financially secure for the rest of his life. He returns home to see his mother's last days.One day, Jenny returns to visit Forrest and he proposes marriage to her. She declines, though feels obliged to prove her love to him by sleeping with him. She leaves early the next morning. On a whim, Forrest elects to go for a run. Seemingly capriciously, he decides to keep running across the country several times, over some three and a half years, becoming famous.In present-day, Forrest reveals that he is waiting at the bus stop because he received a letter from Jenny who, having seen him run on television, asks him to visit her. Once he is reunited with Jenny, Forrest discovers she has a young son, of whom Forrest is the father. Jenny tells Forrest she is suffering from a virus (probably HIV, though this is never definitively stated). Together the three move back to Greenbow, Alabama. Jenny and Forrest finally marry. Jenny dies soon afterward.The film ends with father and son waiting for the school bus on little Forrest's first day of school. Opening the book his son is taking to school, the white feather from the beginning of the movie is seen to fall from within the pages. As the bus pulls away, the white feather is caught on a breeze and drifts skyward.

The narrator (Edward Norton) is an automobile company employee who travels to accident sites to perform product recall cost appraisals. His doctor refuses to write a prescription for his insomnia and instead suggests that he visit a support group for testicular cancer victims in order to appreciate real suffering. By attending the group, the narrator feels distraught at the condition of these ill fated people and breaks down. He is then able to sleep soundly and subsequently fakes more illnesses so he can attend other support groups in order to get out his pent up emotions through crying. The narrator's routine is disrupted when he begins to notice another impostor, Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), at the same meetings and his insomnia returns.During a flight for a business trip, the narrator meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), who is a soap salesman. The narrator arrives home to find his apartment has been destroyed by an explosion. He calls Tyler and meets him at a bar. Tyler agrees to let the narrator stay at his home on the condition that the narrator hits him. The narrator complies and the two end up enjoying a fist fight outside the bar. The narrator moves into Tyler's dilapidated house and the two return to the bar, where they have another fight in the parking lot. After attracting a crowd, they establish a 'fight club' in the bar's basement.When Marla overdoses on Xanax, she is rescued by Tyler and the two embark upon a sexual relationship. Tyler tells the narrator never to talk about him with Marla. Under Tyler's leadership, the fight club becomes "Project Mayhem," which commits increasingly destructive acts of anti-capitalist vandalism in the city. The fight clubs become a network for Project Mayhem, and the narrator is left out of Tyler's activities with the project. After an argument, Tyler disappears from the narrator's life and when a member of Project Mayhem dies on a mission, the narrator attempts to shut down the project. Tracing Tyler's steps, he travels around the country to find that fight clubs have been started in every major city, where one of the participants identifies him as Tyler Durden. A phone call to Marla confirms his identity and he realizes that Tyler is an alter ego of his own split personality. Tyler appears before him and explains that he controls the narrator's body whenever he is asleep.The narrator faints and awakes to find Tyler has made several phone calls during his blackout and traces his plans to the downtown headquarters of several major credit card companies, which Tyler intends to destroy in order to cripple the financial networks. Failing to find help with the police, many of whom are members of Project Mayhem, the narrator attempts to disarm the explosives in the basement of one of the buildings. He is confronted by Tyler, knocked unconscious, and taken to the upper floor of another building to witness the impending destruction. The narrator, held by Tyler at gunpoint, realizes that in sharing the same body with Tyler, he is the one who is actually holding the gun. He fires it into his mouth, shooting through the cheek without killing himself. The illusion of Tyler collapses with an exit wound to the back of his head. Shortly after, members of Project Mayhem bring a kidnapped Marla to the narrator and leave them alone. The bombs detonate and, holding hands, the two witness the destruction of the entire financial city block through the windows.

Its a refreshing film in its ability to deal with adult issues while remaining an invigorating cinematic experience.

 

::Cinema Paradiso 1988::

Beginning at the end, the movie opens with Salvatore's mother trying to inform him of the death of Alfredo. Salvatore, a filmmaker who has not been home since his youth, leaves Rome immediately to attend the funeral. Through flashbacks we watch Salvatore in his youth, in a post WWII town in Southern Italy. As a young boy he is called Toto and he has a strong affinity for the cinema. Toto often sneaks into the movie theater when he shouldn't and harasses the projectionist, Alfredo, in attempts to get splices of film that are cut out by the church because they contain scenes of kissing. Toto has a younger sister and war widowed mother who often struggle due to the lost of Toto's father. Toto is banned from the movie theater by his mother when his film bits accidentally catch fire and nearly kill his sister along with burning up the only picture Toto has of his father along with other family photographs. Eventually he sneaks his way back and forms a father-son bond with Alfredo, despite Alfredo's reluctancy, Toto even learns how to run the projector. Meanwhile one of the townspeople wins the lotto and becomes a rich man. One day in the cinema, after Toto leaves to watch the movie with his friends below, the film catches fire in the projector and knocks Alfredo out. Young Toto rescues Alfredo from death in the fire, unfortunately the cinema burns down and Alfredo loses his sight. Lucky the lotto-lucky-townsman pays to have a new cinema put up. Since Toto already knows how to run the projector he works with Alfredo in the projection room. Some years pass and Salvatore is now a young man. A rich girl, Elena, comes to town and Salvatore and his friends vie for her attention. Salvatore films her and begins to fall in love. Alfredo advises him to steer clear of love because it only causes pain. Despite his warning, Salvatore confesses his love to Elena, who's reply is that she does not, but she could. So he waits, every night outside her house for her reply. One day he gives up and trudges home depressed and upset only to soon discover that Elena does love him in return. They begin a passionate romance, like that of two newlyweds. Unfortunately, Elena's father doesn't approve and so he takes Elena away. All summer they try to meet, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. On one particular day he tries to reach her and she him but their paths don't cross. As we discover later, Alfredo catches Elena and convinces her to leave Salvatore alone out of love. Salvatore then wanders without purpose and eventually joins the military due to the requirement by Italian law that all male youths serve for a period of time in the army. When he returns to his home town, all has changed and he cannot adjust. Alfredo urges him to leave and tells him that if her were to ever return, he would not see him. Obviously Salvatore goes on the become a successful filmmaker. As he wanders the remains of his town after the funeral he sees a vision of Elena just as she was when they were young, he realizes it is Elena's daughter and follows her to Elena's home where he sees that she married one of Salvatore's childhood friends, a dunce when Salvatore knew him. He confronts Elena and they meet. They talk and she reveals to him that she didn't miss out on their fatal reunion but rather that Alfredo convinced her to leave. Salvatore realizes what a role Alfredo had in shaping his life and that Alfredo knew that if he stayed with Elena he would have no chance to pursue his love of film and so by going to Rome to become a filmmaker he sacrificed his love for Elena. Salvatore and Elena say farewell and go their separate ways. Salvatore returns to Rome with a can of film left to him by Alfredo. It contains all the splices of the kissing scenes from Salvatore's youth.

Face/Off is a 1997 film directed by John Woo, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. The two both play an FBI agent and a terrorist, sworn enemies who assume the physical appearance of one another.

The film exemplifies gun fu and heroic bloodshed action sequences, and has Travolta and Cage each playing two personalities. It was the first Hollywood film in which Woo was given complete creative control and was acclaimed by both audiences and critics as a result. Eventually grossing $245 million worldwide, Face/Off was a financial success.

Public enemy number one and freelance terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) is being relentlessly pursued by FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta). Years earlier, Troy had attempted to kill Archer, who barely survived with a chest wound, but the bullet struck Archer's little son Michael who died of his injuries.

Troy is recorded in the FBI files to have a whole list of terrorism-related offences, including bombings and political assassinations. The FBI receives information that Castor's brother Pollux (Alessandro Nivola) has chartered a plane at a Los Angeles airport, and Archer knows the Troy brothers well enough to guess that Pollux "doesn't fly without big brother!" Archer leads an FBI team in chasing the plane down a runway and is able to shoot out one of the engines. Unable to take off, Castor kills both the pilot and one of Archer's agents, then crashes the plane into a hangar. In the ensuing chaos, which leaves several FBI agents wounded or dead, Pollux is captured by the Feds and Castor is knocked into a coma after bragging to Archer about a biological bomb that will destroy Los Angeles.

Archer initially believes Castor was bluffing, but after the FBI finds schematics for the bomb on a disk recovered from Pollux's briefcase, Archer realizes that the threat is genuine. Although he learns the date of the bombing from several of Castor's henchmen, including Castor's bomb supplier Dietrich Hassler (Nick Cassavetes), Archer is unable to find any information about the location of the bomb itself. Knowing that the only way to obtain the location is from Castor's brother, Pollux, Archer's colleagues, Tito and Miller, present him with a top-secret mission and convince him to undergo a surgical procedure to temporarily graft Archer's face and pose as Castor in order to gain information about the bomb from Pollux. (Though the time-period is never specified in the film and largely implied to be the present, the technology shown here and later in the prison is partially anachronistic, contrasting with the technology used in the rest of the film.)

After the procedure, arrangements are made for Archer (as Castor) to be incarcerated with Pollux at the Erehwon Penitentiary (Erehwon being "nowhere" spelled backwards), where he convinces Pollux that he is Castor and learns the bomb's location. Meanwhile, Castor unexpectedly awakens from his coma (it is implied this is a result of shock from the trauma of the surgery) and, realizing what has happened, calls his men to kidnap Doctor Walsh (Colm Feore), the doctor who performed the surgery. He then forces Walsh to give him Archer's face.

Castor (as Archer) then visits Archer (as Castor) at Erehwon prison. Castor tells the shocked Archer about how he killed Walsh, Tito and Miller, how he destroyed all evidence of their face-swap, and his plan to abuse Archer's job and have sex with his wife. Castor has the FBI negotiate a deal with Pollux for his release in return for revealing the bomb's location (which is at the Los Angeles Convention Center). Castor then proceeds to disarm the bomb and revels in praise from his colleagues and the media, having informed his brother that they are "going straight", meaning they will use Archer's identity and influence to their advantage and for their own purposes. Ironically, given Castor's gregarious, irreverent nature and off-beat sense of humor, he becomes more popular at work than the real Archer was — the impatient and bad tempered Archer having spoiled victory celebrations with reminders of the lives that they had cost.

After Castor's disarmament of the bomb, Archer escapes from Erehwon prison, which is revealed to be inside an offshore oil platform in the Pacific Ocean, and swims to shore. Some time later, Archer visits Dietrich and successfully fools him and the rest of Castor's men into thinking that he is the real Castor Troy. Archer then asks Dietrich for help killing Castor (as Archer).

By this point, both men have begun to see firsthand how their hatred for one another affects each other's close ones. As Archer, Castor revels in the praises of his co-workers, is more tender and affectionate with wife Eve (Joan Allen) than Sean was, and even reaches out to Archer's teenage daughter Jamie (Dominique Swain): Castor smokes cigarettes openly with her, gives her a balisong for protection, and even violently assaults a boy (played by Danny Masterson) who tries to force himself on Jamie. He even feels compassion for Eve when they visit her son's grave on what should have been his birthday.

Meanwhile, Archer (forced to play along with the part of Troy) finds himself having to take drugs and impress the terrorists with his knowledge about Sean Archer which even Castor never knew. Also present is Sasha Hassler (Gina Gershon), Dietrich's sister and Castor's ex-girlfriend, and her son Adam. Archer is told that Adam is Troy's son (one thing on Troy that he appears to have been unaware of) and sees a lot of his late son Michael in Adam. Earlier, when he was himself, Archer interrogated Sasha and threatened to put her son into foster care. He now comes to realize that she is in fact a devoted mother and feels sorry for what he did. Later, when she offers to join him in his final battle with Troy (as Archer), Archer (as Troy) promises her "whatever happens, Sean Archer's off your back for good."

Pollux Troy is watching Dietrich's apartment and informs Castor of Archer's arrival. Castor sends an FBI team to kill Archer. There follows a brutal, lengthy gunfight, in which many FBI agents and terrorists are killed. Dietrich is killed by Castor as he tries to shield Sasha and Adam, who manage to evade capture. As he makes his own escape, Archer catches Pollux and drops him through the apartment skylight. Pollux falls to the ground and is killed outright. Castor is left distraught and almost suicidal over the death of his brother. When an FBI agent asks why he is shedding tears for the likes of Pollux Troy, Castor shoots him dead on the spot.

FBI Director Victor Lazarro (Harve Presnell) berates Castor (as Archer) for his unnecessary carnage with the terrorists and queries as to how he happens to suddenly know so much about their movements. Castor, still angry over the death of Pollux, confesses his true identity to Lazarro and kills him, blaming Lazarro's death on a heart attack. As a result, Castor becomes appointed as the new acting-FBI Director. Meanwhile, Archer returns to his suburban home and tries to explain the entire situation and convince his wife, Eve, that he is really Archer, but to no avail. After an analysis of Castor's blood type, Eve still does not believe, but after her husband tells her the story of how they had their first kiss, she eventually realizes the truth.

Sasha and Archer track Castor to Lazarro's funeral, where Castor is holding Archer's wife and daughter Jamie hostage. With Eve caught in the middle, cops and gangsters hold each other at gunpoint. A gunfight then ensues in which Sasha and all of Castor's minions are killed. Having taken a bullet to save Archer, Sasha begs him not to let Adam grow up to be a criminal.

Castor and Archer engage in both a gun battle and hand-to-hand fight, with Archer gaining the upper hand. Jamie finds a gun and shoots at Archer (as Castor), believing him to be the real Castor, and wounds him in the shoulder, allowing the real Castor to break free. Castor takes Jamie hostage but she gets him to let go by stabbing him in the leg — ironically a trick which he himself taught her earlier.

Castor manages to escape in a boat, pursued by Archer. After a lengthy chase both Archer and Castor's boats are destroyed and they are thrown ashore by an explosion resulting from their boats' collisions. The two engage in a final hand-to-hand confrontation which results in Archer eventually prevailing by killing Castor with a spear gun, (which leaves Castor in the same position as the statue shown earlier of Jesus on the cross) but not before Castor tries to destroy Archer's face (on himself) to prevent Archer from reclaiming it.

Archer's wife is able to explain the entire situation to the FBI and successfully convince them of Archer's true identity. Archer is then taken to the hospital and his face is restored, with the exception of his chest scar — which served as a reminder of the loss of his son — as he doesn't "need it anymore," due to Castor's death.

Archer then brings Adam Hassler, Castor Troy's son, into his family, in order to fulfill his promise to Sasha of not allowing Adam to grow up to be a criminal.
